Miami city commissioners meeting today (5/11) are to consider accepting a right-of-way deed of dedication for upland property on the key, a man-made triangular island at the foot of Southeast Eighth Street. It is part of a development agreement the city has with property owner-developer Swire Properties. This month starts the second year of Water Taxi Miami, a taxi service started by manager Max Vlessing that, he said, continues to expand as it gains more passengers and interest. Passenger pick-ups have increased in frequency, now making a stop every hour and a half instead of every two hours. Water Taxi Miami aims to introduce a one-year pilot program to take commuters to and from Miami Beach’s Purdy Avenue Dock by water, adding a route for traveling between Miami Beach and downtown Miami. This would add a route for the water taxi that has been operating since 2012 and currently links Bayside Marketplace, Miami Beach Marina and Sea Isle Marina. The Miami Beach City Commission approved the pilot program. Service is to be offered Fridays through Sundays, tentatively from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. with the ability to extend time and increase days if demand warrants. MIAMI BEACH — The inaugurated its new water taxi service on Friday for people who want to feel like they are on vacation instead of just schlepping through traffic. The new service opened at 3 p.m. on Friday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony along the Purdy Avenue dock at 18 Street and Purdy Avenue in the city’s Sunset Harbour neighborhood. Organizers of the Miami International Boat Show say they have upped the capacity of the water taxi fleet to a maximum capacity of 125,000 for the show, which begins next week.
